Who We AreThe Coalition’s creation was sparked by the experience and the needs of low-income women of color who experienced domestic violence and sexual assault, and it continues to be led by survivors from the North Brooklyn community. As an organization founded by Latinx and Black survivors, we are committed to serving all survivors, with an emphasis on the Latinx and Black communities in North Brooklyn.
All of our services are provided to all survivors regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin or immigration status. |
Our History
The North Brooklyn Coalition Against Family Violence (the Coalition) is a grassroots organization serving survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in the North Brooklyn neighborhoods of Williamsburg, Bushwick and Greenpoint.
The Coalition was launched in 1996 by a survivor, Evelyn Cardona, from North Brooklyn who saw a need in her community. Assisted by six community-based organizations – Los Sures, St. Nicholas, El Regreso, Brooklyn Legal Services Corporation A, Nuestros Ninos and Ridgewood Bushwick – Evelyn was able to establish the Coalition as one of the only organizations serving victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in North Brooklyn.
Today, the founding community-based organizations serve as the liaisons for referrals of participants in the various housing, social services, legal services, and employment programs. Each operates in different parts of the community.
