Testimony:

"I found the Coalition when I was looking for a place to receive counseling...

...Since they gave me so much and still do, I feel the need to give back to them in anyway and form I can, hoping one day I can be a staff at the Coalition and help other women, that like I once came in for help, will leave uplifted and with a brighter outlook on the future."

A Client's Testimonial

"I found the Coalition when I was looking for a place to receive counseling. I looked in the domestic violence resource book and I found several places, but they were outdated. Then I headed to a local social service organization and I was told by the receptionist that they don’t offer any of the services there, but that she had received counseling at a location and made a photocopy of the Coalition business card. I called the same day and it was answered by a staff person who immediately spoke to me. I explained how stressed I was and she told me to come over right away.

I arrived there and was greeted by Lia (the Senior Case Manager) who immediately made me feel comfortable and let me speak to her in private. She offered me the option to come to the support group which was to be starting in 3 weeks and I accepted her invitation. In the meantime I was going to individual counseling and feeling better each day. When the support group started, it was wonderful and I feel empowered with each meeting and have made a bond with each member.

After that, I went to my graduation. It was a wonderful thing and we were an amazing group, all determined to make changes in our lives. After this support I went to a second support group and it was a big help to me. I have remained in contact with the Coalition, not so much for the need, but as a part of them. Since they gave me so much and still do, I feel the need to give back to them in anyway and form I can, hoping one day I can be a staff at the Coalition and help other women, that like I once came in for help, will leave uplifted and with a brighter outlook on the future."

The goal of the North Brooklyn Coalition Against Family Violence program is to decrease the incidence of domestic violence in the community and mitigate its effects on victims and their families. By providing community based services and creating a locally based support network, the Coalition seeks to reduce the practical and cultural barriers which often prevent victims from seeking or receiving assistance from the criminal justice system. Our ultimate goal is to enable survivors of domestic violence to negotiate the criminal justice system, break the cycle of violence, and increase their capacity to take back power and control of their own lives so that they may safely remain in the community, if they wish, or begin new lives elsewhere.

History:

The North Brooklyn Coalition Against Family Violence (the Coalition) is a grassroots, domestic violence organization serving the North Brooklyn neighborhoods of Williamsburg, Bushwick and Greenpoint. The Coalition was created in 1998 by six community –based organizations: Los Sures, St. Nicholas, El Regreso, Brooklyn Legal Services Corporation A, Nuestros Ninos and Ridgewood Bushwick. Its creation was sparked by the experience and the needs of low-income women who had participated in a series of domestic violence support groups. The founding community-based organizations serve as the liaisons for referrals of participants in the various housing, social services, legal services, and employment programs. Each operates in different parts of the community.
